I went out in December 2009. I'm still trying to process it. The only good thing about the present economy is that nobody even blinks when I tell them I'm not doing the 9-5 dance any more. I honestly think I know more people now without 9-5 than I do people with 9-5. I have fibromyalgia, CFS, and PTSD. I blog about it at www.cluelessincarolina.com. Nice to meet you and I'll be back.

Spin, indeed. ;) I love reading your blog, Marc. It's a welcome respite from the whining and complaining that's so rampant now.

Do I wish I didn't have MS and the disability that it's brought along to the party? Of course I do! But I also wish I had a Ferrari sitting in my garage instead of my conversion van carrying my pink wheelchair with the wheels that light up when I'm rolling. Michael-yeah, I really despised wearing a tie. The things serve no useful function, other than to remind you of your servitude. I even tried to dress mine up with antique tie clips and pins, but there was no disguising them.

Marie-you're much too kind. And you are a wonderful writer, who in a just universe would be scribbling to her hearts content day in and day out. And don't give up the search for that elusive second spouse. While you're at it, try to make sure you bag a rich one...

It's not "going on disablity". It's early retirement. It projects an air of success when one says they "retired" before age 50. Or in my case age 30. It may only be semantics, but I'll debate that when I'm warm and dry and sipping my coffee while everyone else is scraping ice from car windows and battling rush hour traffic. :-)

Your thoughts are so helpful as I continue to put off going on disability, even though it has become incredibly difficult to go in to work each day. I'm afraid to leave a career I've had since 1977, although I hate the job most days. Thanks. It gives me courage, maybe even hope...

Of course you were the best best boss they ever had. You are one of the nicest guys I have ever met. :)

You put a wonderful spin on what is a daunting event. I feel the same way. I am proud of the fact that after my husband died I was able to support 4 children in a very nice lifestyle indeed. But all I want to do is write.

Several of my providers have encouraged me to consider disability. My total take per month on disability? $1200. My mortgage is $1300. We all know what Mr. Micawber said.

If only I could scrape up another spouse. But anyone who reads my blog knows how that has gone as well. Sigh. So I keep working, keep upright, keep hoping.

So, Marc, this is Janet, and after reading this post I have to tell you that my daughter received one of those Horatio Alger scholarships in 2008. Big trip to DC and everything. She now attends college in Wisconsin and is majoring in Communications with an emphasis in Media and Film. My two cents worth of coincidence for the day.
